We are a team of over 250 problem solvers dedicated to making the physical world around us better for everyone.

Based out of our combined workshop and design studios in London, Shanghai, Singapore and California, we create buildings, spaces, objects and infrastructure.

We want to see a world where the buildings and places around us are radically more joyful, engaging and human.

Our team of architects, designers, makers, engineers and landscape architects share a motivation to design soulful and impactful places, which celebrate the complexities of the real world. The approach driving everything is to lead from human experience rather than any fixed design belief.

WE ARE PRACTICAL INVENTORS

We start each project from scratch, putting aside any preconceived ideas. By asking questions and challenging assumptions, we uncover the real issues and potential solutions at the heart of each project.

WE ARE MAKERS

Working with craftspeople and specialist contractors is integral to our design process. In our dedicated workshop, we constantly test ideas that lead to three-dimensional, materially-interesting objects or places.

WE ARE POSITIVE AND PRAGMATIC

Our team are collaborators whose role is to listen and then help lead each project. We find answers that combine ingenuity and inspiration with designs that are affordable, buildable and sustainable.

Thomas Heatherwick

The studio’s founder and design director comes from a background immersed in materials and making.

His curiosity and passion for problem-solving matured into the studio’s current design process where every architect, designer, landscape architect and maker is encouraged to challenge and contribute ideas.
